Kommetjie, meaning "small basin" in Afrikaans, has a history that dates back centuries. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Khoi-San people, the area later became a stopover point for Dutch explorers and sailors who sought refuge along the Cape coast. Over time, Kommetjie transformed into a quaint fishing village, where local fishermen would venture out into the abundant waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the village's most notable landmarks is the iconic Slangkop Lighthouse, proudly standing as a testament to Kommetjie's maritime heritage. Erected in 1919, this historic beacon has guided countless ships to safety, its light piercing through the darkness and acting as a guardian for seafarers along the treacherous coastline.
