BELLY OF THE BEAST

Since opening in August 2018, Chef's Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart offer a tasting menu for lunch and dinner in their 30 seater restaurant. Since then, this  wildly popular Harrington Street haunt hasn’t had an empty seat. Neil Swart explains: “Cooking dishes on a small scale enhances the depth of flavour of each element.”

There are no menu options or set amount of courses. All you do is show up and trust the crew to satisfy with their seasonal fare. They source from local sustainable producers and use every part of the animal. You can expect some dishes that might test your boundaries, but there is always a certain balance in the menu so that everyone will enjoy the experience.

In conjunction with the communality of the open kitchen, and the fanfare with which the dishes are presented and served, dinner at Belly of the Beast is more than a meal, it’s a gastronomic experience.

For R750 per person for dinner, you’re treated to a number of excellent courses, as well as a bread service, a celestial palette cleanser à la Anouchka, and an after-dessert delight – “the last hoorah”, as Neil calls it. We enjoyed a four course - actually six as there was pre-course and second dersert - and it was brilliant. We loved the the roasted 5yr old sour dough bread with duck liver pâté. Luch is about ZAR 550.

It was for us the best food experience, also looking at value for money. So, do not expect a spectacular presentation with steaming pots as in La Colombe. At BOTB the food speaks for itself. Please see pictures below.
